Why do we and other physicians ask you about your home life during your visits with us? It is because we want to help women who are victims of domestic violence from an intimate partner. Domestic violence includes physical, sexual or emotion harm and is a vicious cycle. Many women experience forms of abuse for many years and feel as if they have no escape and are afraid to tell anyone.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) advocates for the well-being of women and reports that 1 in 3 women in the US will experience some sort of domestic violence in her lifetime. ACOG recognizes a trusted physician is often the first person to become aware of an abusive situation.
Our physicians and staff at Gynecology & Laparoscopic Surgeons, PC recognize that domestic abuse is a pattern and is often very isolating. All communication with your physician or the office staff is completely confidential and cannot be shared without your expressed consent. Our office is a safe place to discuss this problem if it is happening in your life.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and we wanted to take this opportunity to remind our patients and all women that there is help should you find yourself in a dangerous situation. ACOG has some very helpful information: https://www.acog.org/Patients/FAQs/Domestic-Violence
